Dr. Giap received his graduate degree in nuclear engineering (cum laude) from Texas A&M University in 1986. After working at a commercial nuclear reactor in Texas for several years, he got accepted in the M.D./Ph.D. Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHSCH) where he completed both Medical Doctor and Doctor of Philosophy in Medical Physics at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in 1994. For his dissertation, he developed a three-dimensional treatment planning software for systemic radionuclide therapy, and his research won him the award at the Young Investigator Symposium at American Association of Physicists in Medicine annual meeting 1993. He did his residency training at Loma Linda University Medical Center with focus on proton beam therapy. After that, he did a clinical fellowship at Scripps Clinic in stereotactic radiosurgery and brachytherapy. He worked as clinical radiation oncologist at Scripps Clinic from 1998 to 2008. He has done researched, published, and given talks in the field of vascular brachytherapy to prevent coronary artery restenosis, biophysical modeling, radio-labeled antibody, Stereotactic Radiosurgery, partial breast irradiation, radio-embolization with Y-90 microspheres. He was appointed to The Scripps Research Institute Skaggs Scholar. He was one of the contributors to the American College of Radiology (ACR) and American Society of Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) for several clinical guidelines (Radioembolization with Brachytherapy Device Yttrium-90 microspheres and Total Body Irradiation). He gave refresher courses at the annual ASTRO national meetings (2001, 2005, and 2006) on the topic of “Vascular brachytherapy” and “Radiation therapy for benign diseases”. He serves as a member of the ASTRO Annual Meeting and Program committee, Information Technology Development and Resource Committee, and Targeted Radionuclide Therapy Committee. He also serves as reviewers of the International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, and Physics and Medical Physicsjournals. He has been invited as lecturers for many clinical symposiums including the Harvard Medical School Annual Brachytherapy Review (2004) and Grand-Rounds lectures internationally. He developed a Cyberknife protocol for treatment with breast cancer. He chaired the Protocol Development Committee of the thoracic section for Cyberknife Society. He is the author of several book chapters and a few dozens of peer-reviewed journal publications. He is the Co-Editor-in-Chief of the peer-reviewed Translational Cancer Research journal. He is the Editor-in-Chief for the International Journal of Medical Physics, Clinical Engineering, and Radiation Oncology.
Dr. Giap is the Co-chairperson of the Publication Committee and a member of the Executive Committee of the PTCOG (Particle Beam Therapy Co-Operative Group). Dr. Giap served as the Chief Medical Officer for Advanced Particle Therapy, LLC, which develops the Scripps Proton Therapy Center in San Diego. He also served on the board of directors for both the Scripps Proton Therapy Center and Maryland Proton Therapy Center. He is also the CEO for Strategic International Medical Business Alliance, LLC, to develop cancer centers in Southeast Asia.
